Spotlight On...Neighborhood Supper Club
Stuyvesant Town, Manhattan
By Teddi Ginsberg

It seems as though the recession has brought out our creative sides, such as bargain hunting, eBay selling, and odd job seeking. Stuy Town supper ClubThe Stuy Town Supper Club, however, has more to do with connecting people and sustainable resources than it does with the economic downfall.

Carolyn Gilles, Green Edge founder and former natural foods chef, hosted the first potluck in her Park Slope home and claims that the idea quickly caught on. And why wouldn’t it, being such a simple yet refreshing idea to bring together people through two undeniable people pleasers – good conversation and good food.

Green Edge defines neighborhood supper clubs as small potlucks that “are intended for neighbors to get to know neighbors while sharing their skills, ideas, and interests in urban sustainability”. Members are asked to bring courses or beverages and are encouraged to know the origins of their contributions so as to include ingredients that are both fresh and local.

The Stuy Town Supper Club was created because of an increasing interest for a medium that allowed Green Edge members living in this New York neighborhood to meet. A supper club is an ideal opportunity to evoke environmentalism and, just as importantly, to eat!

Let's Eat!

Currently there are thirteen members of the Stuy Town Supper Club, which encourages sharing recipes and choosing future dinner dates within a message board on their homepage through Green Edge.

Because I have not yet been fortunate enough to attend a ‘meeting’ of the Stuy Town Supper Club, I reached out to member Megan Holly to get her feedback on the group and past events. She hosted the most recent dinner in her home and is happy to report that the guests enjoyed both the cuisine and the conversation. She comments that while they have only had three dinners to date, she’s hopeful that it’s only the beginning.

“I would say that we are certainly seeking new members and would love for the group to expand," Megan adds. It seems that aside from a small core group, there are different people every time. I have really enjoyed the suppers and would be thrilled for more people to attend so that we can continue to have them!”
